A.I.S.I.-S.A.E. Tool Steel Type-None

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

The well-balanced chemical composition of PYROTEM readily lends itself to general hot work applications such as closed press and forging machine dies. It is particularly suitable for drop hammer applications requiring increased compressive strength and higher resistance to the softening effect of heat. PYROTEM was designed for those applications where the standard die steel does not provide the desired die life PYROTEM should not be confused with 2714 as its performance is far superior to that of the 2714 type material.

PYROTEM is also used for cold applications such as Shear Blades.

ANNEALING

Heat to 1400/1425°F, hold at temperature until heated through and cool slowly in furnace to 680°F

Note: If greater softness is desired, arrest cooling at 1240°F and 680°'F for four (4) hour periods.

PYROTEM and Pyroneal should always be annealed before rehardening.
.
HARDENING

It is recommended that, in order to minimize scaling or decarburization, the finish-machined surfaces of dies and tools be protected against oxidizing atmospheres by heating the steel in a controlled atmosphere furnace. If this is not available, the steel may be heated in a neutral salt bath or in a conventional furnace with the steel completely packed in spent pitch coke, or similar material.
.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Hammer Dies
Press Dies
Upsetter Dies
Insert Dies
Gripper Dies
Header Dies
Shear Blades
Piercing Mandrels

PYROTEM Die Blocks are furnished prehardened and tempered in commercially machinable ranges of hardness, ready to use after machining of the impression and offered in two standard hardness ranges:

PYROTEM A = Hardness-Rc 41/45

PYROTEM B = Hardness-Rc 36/40

Pyroneal can be furnished in the annealed condition for hardening by the customer to same hardness greater than the commercial machinable hardness ranges offered in PYROTEM.
