A.I.S.I.-S.A.E. Tool Steel Type-None

Composite Forgings Ltd. SPECIAL C is furnished to the Tool and Die Steel trade in the prehardened condition and in the annealed condition.

General Characteristics
SPECIAL C is a more highly-alloyed die steel and is intended for use in the most severe applications such as deep forging dies, where very high compressive strength and the resistance to the softening at elevated temperatures is desired. They are also resistant to abrasion and to surface cracking at higher hardness levels.
Recommended Applications
Press Dies Hammer Dies
HERF Dies Insert Dies
Upsetter Dies Extrusion Dies
Other Extrusion Tooling

Note: SPECIAL C Die Blocks are furnished prehardened and tempered in commercially machinable ranges of hardness, ready to use after machining of the impression and offered in three standard hardness ranges:

AA Hardness -Rc 45/49
A Hardness - Rc 41/45
B Hardness - Rc 36/40

SPECIAL C ANNEALED is furnished in the annealed condition for subsequent hardening by the customer to some hardness greater than the commercially machinable hardness ranges offered in SPECIAL C.

It is recommended that "SPECIAL C" and "SPECIAL C" ANNEALED be annealed as follows:

Heat slowly to 1300°F.
Hold at temperature until heated through.
Slow furnace cool to 500°'F.
Reheat to 1220°F. Hold at temperature 2 hours per inch of cross section.
Furnace cool to 1180°F. Hold at 1180°F for 2 hours per inch of cross section
Furnace cool to 500°F.

Note: SPECIAL C should always be annealed before rehardening.
