Open Die Forging

Composite Forgings, Ltd. produce a range of forgings using the open die forging process. Open die forging produces a high strength, homogeneous, and durable forging.

What is Open Die Forging?

Unlike closed die forging, open die forging does not laterally confine the heated metal. Open die forging instead shapes the heated metal between two dies. While the majority of open die forgings are produced on flat dies, other dies such as round swaging dies, mandrels, and V-dies are sometimes used.

In order to perform open die forging, the metal is first heated to high temperatures before being worked gradually into shape. Traditionally, this process was performed by hand, but today at Composite Forgings sophisticated equipment and computer software enable the precision forging demanded by our customers.

Open die forging is commonly thought to be best suited to simple applications such as bars and rings, but with the technology available at Composite Forgings, open die forging can be used to produce highly specialized custom components that offer a range of benefits.

Benefits of Open Die Forging

Open die forging offers an array of benefits, including:

  • Capability to produce large parts
  • High strength
  • Long service life
  • Decreased porosity
  • Improved grain structure
  • Improved mechanical properties
